The job I am doing, the effort I’ve made, is simply good enough. It’s my best effort. It’s not perfect (what is?) It’s good enough for me and good enough for my daughter. After sharing my belief I learned through a friend that the notion of “good enough” parenting is actually a concept deriving from the work of D. W. Winnicot. He noted that it is unhelpful and unrealistic to demand perfection of parents and to do so undermines the efforts of the vast majority of parents who are in all practical respects “good enough” to meet their children’s needs. It is not important that the parent/child relationship is perfect but that the parent is tuned into what the child needs.
